A Lector is an extraordinary minister of the Word, also called a reader, whose main roles include:

• Proclaiming the readings (except the Gospel) during liturgical celebrations.

• Instructing Christians before the reception of the sacraments.

• Carrying the Book of the Gospels in liturgical celebrations in the absence of a deacon.

• Preparing other faithful who temporarily proclaim the Word of God during Mass.

An Acolyte is an extraordinary minister of the Holy Communion whose main roles include:

• Assisting the priest and deacon in the preparation of the gifts on the altar during Mass.

• Distributing Holy Communion during Eucharistic celebrations.

• Bringing Holy Communion to the sick in extraordinary circumstances.

• Exposing the Blessed Sacrament for adoration (without imparting a blessing).

• Carrying the cross and candles during Mass and other liturgical processions.

These ministries are conferred on seminarians undertaking theological studies. The Ministry of Lector is conferred on those in their sixth year of formation, while the Ministry of Acolyte is conferred on those in their seventh year of priestly formation.

Before receiving these ministries, each candidate must obtain the approval of his Bishop by formally requesting admission to the respective ministry.

May these seminarians be inspired by the example of the saints, strengthened in their vocation, and guided by the Holy Spirit to lead lives of holiness and service.
