Deacon Joseph Mutisya is set to be ordained to the Order of Priesthood on 27th June 2025 in Rome by the Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV. He will be accompanied by Fr. Josephat Ndunda.
In preparation for his ordination, Deacon Joseph signed the pre-ordination documents on 12/06/2025 at Kitui Pastoral Centre in the presence of the Vicar General, Very Rev. Fr. John Mwandi and the Vocations Director, Rev Fr Edward Mulwa.
He was ordained a deacon by Bishop Joseph Mwongela on 8th December 2024 at St. John Paul II Institute together with Deacons Emmanuel Mwanzia, Julius Munyoki, Joseph Manzi, Stephen Kivite, and Martin Ndonyi who are expected to be ordained priests on 8th December 2025. On the same day, 15 acolytes will be ordained Deacons. Currently, Deacon Joseph is serving at St. Francis of Assisi Kamutei Parish, and he is also the Diocesan Youth Coordinator.
Deacon Joseph began his academic journey at Ketyethoka Primary School, where he sat for the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education in 2007. He proceeded to Kwa-Ukungu Secondary School and completed the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education in 2012.
He began his formation to priesthood at Christ the King Major Seminary from 2015 and completed in 2024. He obtained a Certificate in Spiritual Studies, a degree in Philosophy (a Bachelor of Arts at Catholic University of East Africa (CUEA). He also obtained a bachelor’s degree of arts in theology from CUEA.
The Catholic Diocese of Kitui currently has 97 active priests and 80 seminarians. According to Diocesan Pastoral Strategic Plan 2024–2028, the diocese aims to ordain 50 priests by 2028. The diocese continues to be blessed with numerous vocations, with 10 young men scheduled to join the Major Seminary on 1st August 2025.
