Friends of Kitui ? Nairobi
The Friends of Kitui Diocese, Nairobi (?FOKD?) was formed in 2003 as a key initiative by the then Bishop of Kitui Diocese Right Reverend Bishop Boniface Lele (now Arch Bishop of Mombasa) to involve Catholics from the Diocese working and living in the diaspora (especially Nairobi and Mombasa) to participate in and connect with the affairs of the Diocese.
The group membership is voluntary and there is no fixed contribution per member, we meet every first Sunday of the month at Our Lady Queen of Peace, South B. The monthly meeting also includes faith moments where members reflect on specific spiritual matters and Catholic doctrine.
At quarterly intervals, we have Mass at one of the member?s houses presided over by a priest from the Diocese. The highlight of the year is the annual barbecue, which is normally preceded by Mass, celebrated by the Bishop of Kitui assisted by as many priests from the Diocese as are able to attend. This event provides an avenue for socialization between the members and the clergy from the Diocese.
With the guidance of the Bishop and the Pastoral office, FOKD has over the years identified certain key projects in the Diocese, which it supports either financially or through members? voluntary professional services. The current main project supported by FOKD is the training of catechists from virtually every parish in the Diocese. By April 2010, FOKD had sponsored 191 catechists who had successfully graduated and were working in various parishes. A new class of 37 catechists is undergoing training and is expected to graduate in April 2011. FOKD?s dream is to see each out-station having at least one trained catechist.
FOKD has consistently participated in the annual Diocesan Fundraising through direct financial contribution or indirectly by some of its members accepting to be guests at the event.
FOKD members also serve in various boards of Diocesan institutions like schools, hospitals, polytechnic, Finance Committee, etc. The Diocese also calls upon professionals within FOKD to advise on specific matters on pro bono basis e.g. legal, accounting and financial management, engineering and construction, procurement, etc.
FOKD currently has less than twenty (20) committed members. We invite all Catholics from Kitui Diocese working and living in Nairobi to join us every first Sunday of the month for sharing and connecting with our Mother Diocese. Membership is free and voluntary - any financial contribution is voluntary with no fixed obligation on members.
